Change starts at home. When we begin to take care of our local communities, those communities begin to blend together to create an all encompassing community that knows the value of protecting our environment. In 2010, 82 percent of Americans lived in cities; by 2050 it will be 90%. Cities are responsible for around two-thirds of the energy used, 60 percent of all water consumed, and 70 percent of all greenhouse gases produced worldwide. There is a lot that can be done individually within local communities to improve the environment.
THE NEED FOR ENVIROCLUBS
In late 2011, Ernst & Young, in cooperation with
GreenBiz Group, conducted a survey consisting of 272 sustainability executives
in 24 industry sectors that are employed by companies generating revenue
greater than $1 billion. They discovered
that 76 percent of survey respondents anticipate natural resource shortages
will affect their core business objectives over the next 3-5 years. The world needs positive change and it will come from the growing community of campus clubs.
